Pennies and dimes for better times

Pennies and Dimes for Better Times was created to help children in need living in Sri Lanka. Many impoverished Sri Lankan children are often neglected and not able to live to their full potential. Pennies and Dimes for Better Times does various projects depending on the situation in Sri Lanka to aid these children through troubled times. Whether it was surviving a horrid tsunami or living through a terrible civil war, these children have been through a lot. Pennies and Dimes for Better Times was designed to help them.

Meeting the Sri Lankan to US Ambassador

We met the Sri Lankan Ambassoder to the US in 2009. We talked to him about the Pennies and Dimes for Better Times project and asked him for advice.

First Project - Children displaced by civil war

Sri Lanka had been in a very long Civil War. The war had not only killed many people, but had also destroyed homes and families. Many children were left homeless and orphaned. These children may not have the money to afford schooling. By collecting spare change and selling small Sri Lankan treats, we buy school supplies for these children encouraging them to continue their education despite the horrible tragedies they have experienced. Education is important for a young child. It will higher these children's chance of having a successful and fulfilling life which they so greatly deserve.

Update from coordinator: We worked with The Institute Of Human Rights in Sri Lanka (IHR). They chose a group of children who have been affected by the civil war. We received profiles for every child we helped and updates on how they are doing after our contribution. If you would like to learn more about IHR, please visit: www.ihrsrilanka.org.

NESLY Coordinator Dilini Palamakumbura is a high school student in Massachusettes. With much help and support from her fellow SLANE Youth members, she has collected and sent money to help her cause.
